Our Ponies

These are the ponies that are currently residing at Munchkins. Some of the ponies are currently up for rehoming. If you are interested in rehoming, complete a rehoming application form which can be found here. Please note, we only rehome within 50 miles of our centre in Colyton, East Devon so please do not contact us if you are further away than this.

Butterscotch

8th May 2012

Butterscotch came to Munchkins via a referral from a local animal sanctuary. He was very thin and suffers from stiff back legs. He cannot be stabled as periods of immobility make him worse. Butterscotch also suffers from repeated tooth abscesses and has had to have multiple surgeries on his face. He is very gentle and friendly and is one of our top petting ponies attending local events with us.

Lady

October 2010

Lady came to Munchkins after being rescued from a neglectful and abusive home. She had been beaten and pinned down often in order for her feet to be trimmed. Because of this, Lady was extremely nervous of people when she first arrived and it took weeks to even get near her. She also arrived in foal and gave birth to Toby in the field among the herd. Lady has come a long way since she came to Munchkins and she is learning to trust humans more and more each day.

Ozzy

8th May 2014

Ozzy came to Munchkins as a foal with his Mum. However, his Mum sadly died and Ozzy did not cope very well and his mane and tail fell out. These days, Ozzy is a very happy pony and loves charging round the fields with the others.

Beauty

1997

Beauty came over from Ireland with her 2 daughters, Amber & Honey after their owner could no longer care for them. Beauty suffers from laminitis & cushings so needs careful monitoring and restricted grazing.  She is very friendly.

Herbie

30th May 2004

Herbie came to Munchkins after his owners emigrated. He is very friendly and gentle. Herbie is one of our top petting ponies and often attends local shows and events with us.

Blossom

1999

Blossom arrived at Munchkins with her 18 month old foal, Sweetpea. She had a broken headcollar on her head that had not come off in a long time. She was petrified of humans and it tooks months to gain her trust and eventually remove the headcollar. She is becoming more confident each day.

Silver

2005

Silver arrived at Munchkins with her 3 month old foal, Willow. Their elderly owners could not care for them and they were referred to us via another rescue centre. Silver has problems with her back legs and walks very awkwardly but the vets say she is in no pain. She has settled in well to herd life.

Twinkle

1998

Twinkle had been used as a broodmare for most of her life and came to Munchkins a very nervous pony. It has taken years to gain her trust and she can still be way around strangers. She enjoys the quiet life watching the youngsters charging around!

Mary

2001

Mary came from France after her owner could no longer care for her. She suffers from repeated bouts of laminitis so lives in the sand school and track system with limited grass. She is one of the biggest ponies we have but she is very gentle.

Patchwork

23rd May 2010

Patchwork came to Munchkins after his owner died. He was very overweight and had suffered from laminitis for most of his life. He had the typical slipper shaped hoof of a laminitic pony and it took time to bring his hooves back into alignment. He spends his time on our custom built track system with restricted grass and hay.

Felicity

15th May 2003

Felicity was our original petting pony with her son, William. However, as she got older, she developed arthritis in her hind legs and so was retired upon vet advice. She takes daily painkillers and has regular massages. Felicity enjoys meeting visitors at the yard and loves going for walks in the woods.

Guinevere

2016

Guinevere was found dumped in a farmer's field full of cows with companion, Arthur. She was the strongest of the pair and had spent the winter fighting off the cows to protect herself and Arthur. Guinevere is very friendly and gentle and is currently in training to become one of our therapy ponies.

Bijou

12th July 1995

Bijou came to Munchkins from Wales with her Mum, Dainty and other companion, Melody who has now sadly died. Bijou is completely blind and has no eyes. She uses her other senses to get around and Dainty acts as her guide. Bijou is very friendly and loves attention!

Luna

2006

Luna was found abandoned on the side of a main road. She is completely blind but does not have any other health issues. Despite her unknown past, she is enjoying her new life at Munchkins and has made friends with our other blind pony, Bijou.

Teddy

10th March 2007

Teddy was rescued by her previous owner after she had been bred with a large sports horse. She has pelvic problems and is severely prone to laminitis. She cannot live on grass and spends her time out on the track and sand school with her other laminitic friends.

2009

Bess came to Munchkins with 3 other companions after their owner was too ill to look after them. She is the most nervous out of the 4 ponies.

Hector

22nd April 2004

Hector arrived with sister, Hattie. Their owners fell ill and could no longer look after them. Hector is the result of breeding a shetland with a cob. He is broken to drive. Hector is very friendly and loves going for walks with our volunteers. Hector suffers from laminitis and needs strict monitoring in Spring and Summer.

Dainty

1985

Dainty came to Munchkins from Wales with her daughter, Bijou and other companion. She had terrible teeth and had not seen a dentist in a long time. She has since had all her front teeth removed. She is the oldest of our ponies but is enjoying living out her days here at Munchkins.

January

1998

January was one of our most severe rescue cases. She was found in a field with other emaciated ponies and there was even a dead foal in the field. Due to her past, January is extremely nervous of people and does not like being handled. However, she loves to be nosy and is always there to see if you may have a treat for her!

Tiny Tim

13th April 2010

Tiny Tim came to Munchkins after his owner fell ill. He had suffered a severe reaction to some medication and was in veterinary hospital for a long time. He is prone to laminitis and needs close monitoring.

Duffy

7th May 1996

Duffy came to Munchkins after her owner could no longer care for her. She has liver disease which affects her skin so Duffy is clipped so she is more comfortable. She is living out her days here at Munchkins but she is friendly and loves welcoming visitors!

Crumble

2006

Crumble came to Munchkins with companion, Blue, after their owner had a stroke. He has 'club foot' and dwarfism. Crumble is very friendly and has been ridden in the past.

Arthur

2016

Arthur came to Munchkins with Guinevere when they were found dumped in a farmer's field full of cows. He was very unwell when we found him and it took time to build his strength up enough to have him castrated. He is now a healthy, spoilt pony and is currently in training to become one of our petting/therapy ponies. Arthur is our smallest pony standing at 27"

Rolo

1996

Rolo was rescued from Wales after he had been abandoned. He was a very frightened stallion with huge overgrown teeth. We found he had a retained testicle and had to be castrated under general anaesthetic. Rolo is gradually learning to trust humans again with time, patience and love.

Toby

25th June 2015

Toby was born at Munchkins to Lady who arrived in foal. We were lucky enough to witness his birth surrounded by the rest of the herd. Toby is your typical cheeky teenager and is currently learning to long rein and eventually drive.

Honey

2003

Honey came over from Ireland with her mum and sister, Beauty & Amber after their  could no longer care for them. Honey has no health issues but her behaviour can be unpredictable so we do not allow her near children. Honey is very close to her Mum, Beauty and the pair often keep themselves to themselves and don't interact with the rest of the herd.

Blue came to Munchkins with companion, Crumble, after their owner had a stroke and could no longer care for them. They are both very well handled and we hope to retain the pair as petting ponies.

Sweetpea

April 2018

Sweetpea arrived with Mum, Blossom. Blossom had rejected her at birth so Sweetpea was bottle fed, meaning she can be over friendly with humans! She is learning to integrate into the herd and play with them instead of us!

Willow arrived at Munchkins when she was 3 months old with her Mum, Silver via a referral from another rescue centre. She is very friendly and cheeky and enjoys playing with the others in the field.

2009

Eva came to Munchkins with 3 other companions when their owner was too ill to look after them. She suffers from laminitis so needs restricted grazing during the Spring and Summer months.

Reggie

Reggie was our original munchkin and was here before Munchkins began. He likes to act as 'herd leader' and makes friends with all the new arrivals. He is friendly but can sometimes nip little fingers!

Rocky

2000

Rocky came to Munchkins when his owner could no longer care for him. He has mild laminitis and liver disease. He has a unique character so we do not let visitors/children near him. Despite this, he can be very loving and loves a bum scratch!

Nutmeg

26th May 2001

Nutmeg had been used a broodmare all her life, kept to produce foal after foal. She arrived at Munchkins a very nervous pony with a headcollar embedded into her head and a cattle tag through her ear. Nutmeg arrived in foal and soon gave birth to Shadow. She was very protective of him and would not let us near him until he was 6 months old. Nowadays, Nutmeg is still very nervous but has improved a lot. She does not like being handled and enjoys playing 'auntie' to our younger ponies.
