Our Facilities
Unknown to most people, Shetlands have more specialist needs than horses. At Munchkins, we provide tailored care with facilities like restricted grazing paddocks, stables, and hardstanding areas for ponies with hoof issues. We work closely with vets and farriers and create individualized care plans to meet each pony’s needs. Our team ensures that every Shetland, including those with long-term health conditions, receives the attention and support they deserve.
Barn
A large space to store hay, straw and feed, and a dry area for our ponies to come into.
Solarium
​The solarium provides vital warmth for the ponies, especially during cold months, helping to improve circulation and muscle recovery. It's an essential part of their care, supporting their health and rehabilitation.
Track System
Our track system allows the ponies to stay active and healthy by encouraging natural movement while keeping them off grass. This setup helps manage their weight and prevents health issues like laminitis, ensuring their well-being year-round. Our track is surfaced with limestone, which an provides excellent dry surface for our ponies feet.
Concrete Yard
To provide hard standing when the fields become wet and muddy in the winter. It is also good for those who need time off grass to move around and not be shut in.
Isolation Paddock
For new arrivals to settle in separate from the rest of the herd. New arrivals are tested for diseases upon arrival and spend 3 weeks in isolation with their own shelter.
Enrichment
The enrichment area for our rescue ponies is a specially designed space that promotes mental stimulation and physical activity. It includes engaging activities and various structures that encourage natural behaviors, helping our ponies to explore, play, and socialize. This environment not only enhances their well-being but also fosters their confidence and reduces stress. By providing a safe and enriching, we ensure that our ponies thrive both emotionally and physically.
Custom Built Stables
Built in 2019, our stable block is built specifically for Shetlands with low doors, low internal walls so the ponies can see each other, and a sand area connecting the 2 blocks. The stable block is ideal for ponies who need time off grass or are unwell.
Custom Built Lorry
We are able to safely transport the ponies to vet visits and to go out fundraising. We received grants for the lorry from Jean Sainsbury and the Pets at Home Foundation.
Large Barn Shelter
Our spacious barn shelter provides a safe, warm haven for our rescued Shetland ponies throughout the harsh winter months. Designed with their comfort in mind, it offers protection from wind, rain, and cold, while giving them access to a large indoor area that stays dry underfoot. Deep, cosy straw bedding ensures a soft place to rest, helping every pony feel secure, comfortable, and cared for all year round.
